Mister Monday is a young-adult adventure fantasy novel by one of the best and most well-known writers in the genre, Garth Nix. First published in 2003, the novel is the first installment in exciting series called The Keys to the Kingdom. The book (and the series) focuses on the adventures of a rather unique hero, which is an asthmatic 12 year-old named Arthur Penhaligon. What makes the book (and the whole series) interesting is Nix’s imaginative wit that makes the characters, plots, and the story itself gripping. 

Probably one of the most noticeable elements is how time works in The Keys to the Kingdom world. Here, time mixes with places, which means time exists and works differently in different locations. And in this weird world, Arthur Penhaligon has been chosen as the Rightful Heir of the House. Now he has to find the seven keys to unlock the secrets and save the world by defeating the Morrow Days. 

Arthur Penhaligon is not supposed to be a hero. He is supposed to die an early death. But then his life is saved by a key shaped like the minute hand of a clock. 

Arthur is safe—but his world is not. Along with the key comes a plague brought by bizarre creatures from another realm. A stranger named Mister Monday, his avenging messengers with bloodstained wings, and an army of dog-faced Fetchers will stop at nothing to get the key back—even if it means destroying Arthur and everything around him. 

Desperate, Arthur escapes to the mysterious house that has appeared in town—a house that only he can see. Maybe there he can unravel the secrets of the key—and discover his true fate.
